Gentle experts, suppose there is a water pump that, when transporting clean water, fails to reach a certain height due to excessive pipe losses. It is theoretically feasible, but attention must be paid to the sequence of starting and stopping the booster pump and the original pipeline pump, in order to prevent the booster pump from running dry due to a lack of water and thus damaging its seal
One can try replacing the impeller with one of larger diameter, or use variable frequency control, or reduce the pressure at the end of the pipeline to increase the pressure difference
Why not switch to a pump with a higher head?
It’s possible, but the flow rate of the booster pump and the operating procedures need to be taken into account. It is best to replace it directly with a pump of the same flow rate and higher head, as this offers advantages in terms of cost efficiency and ease of operation.
If the traffic requirements are not high and only an increase in pressure is needed, direct up-conversion to a frequency of 60-70 will suffice. If the motor is separate, it is not recommended to use secondary pressure boosting; it’s better to replace the pump head directly. Replacing the pump may seem like an additional investment, but if it operates for more than 2,000 hours per year, the savings on electricity costs each year are sufficient to cover the cost of a new pump.
Pumps used for transporting clean water are generally centrifugal pumps. If you choose a vertical multi-stage centrifugal pump, you can increase the number of stages and replace the motor to achieve the head requirement. For single-stage centrifugal pumps, there is limited room for enlarging the impeller; it is therefore recommended that you replace it with a new pump, taking into account factors such as energy efficiency and operational duration.
