Differences between wound-rotor and squirrel-cage motors for asynchronous motors

Regarding the wound-rotor asynchronous motor, one end of that slip ring is connected to the rotor windings; but where is the other end connected? Since in the diagram a1, b1, and c1 are connected to the power supply, then where is the end connected to the brushes? The stator is capable of generating a rotating magnetic field on its own – does the rotor here need additional power supply? If so, then what is the difference between this and a synchronous motor?
