Dear experts in this field, I’m reaching out to you all for help with a problem regarding leakage in my double-end face seal. As shown in the figure above, corrosion of the threads of the fastening bolts was found after disassembling the static ring seat of an end-face seal on site; however, the seal ring, shaft, and the surfaces of the static and dynamic rings were all in good condition. Upon inspection, only erosion was detected in the volute on the medium side. I just want to ask what exactly caused damage to this mechanical seal. Thank you all
The metal has corroded; if you don’t mention the medium and the type of metal, how can anyone know what’s going on?
It is usually caused by the fact that the surface finish of the dynamic and static sealing surfaces does not meet the required standards during installation, especially in cases where corrosion has occurred and has not been addressed. For reference.
The nut has corroded, so the gland can no longer be tightened properly, which leads to leaks. Check whether there is any reaction between the material and the substances in use
It has been confirmed that the medium does not corrode the bolts. After reinstalling the new bolts, it was found that tightening them posed no problems.

A stationary ring surface in this condition should be fine (ignoring the fact that the gloves are so dirty when performing disassembly and assembly). The suspected issue identified in the current analysis is that the valve on the return pipeline was not adjusted in a timely manner, resulting in pressure buildup throughout the pump. This led to increased vibration of the entire pump, which ultimately caused wear on the bolts and resulted in seal leakage. I’m not sure how likely such an analysis is Thank you. . .
Process operation is one aspect, while maintenance and installation are another. As a maintenance technician, one must consider the issue of surface finish.
