What other factors can have a significant impact on microorganisms?

The factors that generally cause impacts on biological systems include: 1. Hydraulic shock load; excessive water volume can affect the environment in which microorganisms exist within the HRT, and in particular, an increase in the surface load in the secondary sedimentation tank can result in insufficient settling time and sludge suspension; 2. Organic load shocks can lead to excessive activity in the activated sludge, an increase in aerobic demand, and a deterioration in the sedimentation properties of the sludge; as a result, the quality parameters of the effluent improve ; 3. The impact of heavy metals and toxic substances directly causes the death of microorganisms in activated sludge ; 4. Water temperature fluctuations: Changes in water temperature can affect the degradation rate of microorganisms, leading to fluctuations in activated sludge. When the water temperature is below 5°C or above 40°C, the activated sludge will malfunction and become inactive ; 5. Ammonia nitrogen shock: too low levels can lead to nutrient deficiencies, while too high levels can interfere with denitrification processes and act as a biological toxin ; 6. Exposure to mineral plant oils can reduce the sedimentation properties of activated sludge; in severe cases, it can prevent the sludge from flocculating, resulting in significant loss of sludge in the secondary sedimentation tank ; 7. Changes in the types of organic substances pose a challenge; microorganisms need to go through an acclimatization process to adapt to the pollutants present in the incoming water. If there are significant changes in the types and concentrations of these pollutants, the microorganisms require another acclimatization process, and this process can affect the quality of the water exiting the system. 8. pH value fluctuations, either above 6–9 or with severe swings, can cause operational problems in activated sludge systems ; 9. Nutrient shock: When there are significant fluctuations in nutrients, the nutrients necessary for the growth and reproduction of activated sludge are disrupted, which directly affects normal operation.
