It’s a DN100 steam main, with a flow meter of diameter 50; therefore, a reduction in diameter is required. The process specifications state that such a reduction will affect the total amount of steam entering the system, which could lead to a shortage of pipes for distribution. I’m not sure if this will actually happen. My understanding is that when the diameter is reduced from 100 to 50, the flow velocity at that 50-diameter section will increase, but I don’t think it will have a significant impact. So I’m seeking advice from everyone here; no one seems able to answer my questions.
When selecting a flow meter, it is necessary to provide the maximum flow rate, minimum flow rate, and typical flow rate. If the provided parameters are accurate, the constriction in the flow meter serves to ensure more accurate measurement without affecting the amount of air intake....
If diameter reduction and flow restriction are applied, there will be pressure loss, which certainly affects the total flow rate. The manufacturer can provide a calculation sheet for the pressure loss, but it’s not the case that the flow rate is reduced by half just because the diameter is reduced by half; it’s not that significant

For the constriction in the flow meter, the manufacturer must calculate the pressure loss; this value should be provided to the process engineers so that they can determine whether it meets the requirements. Before selecting a flow meter, have the process engineering team tell you the maximum pressure loss allowed for that flow meter; make sure that the pressure loss of the chosen flow meter does not exceed this value.
