For stuffing box heat exchangers, are there any requirements regarding the circular shape of the tube layout? Why are such requirements in place for fixed-plate and U-tube heat exchangers, as well as floating-head heat exchangers? Why aren’t there any such requirements for stuffing box heat exchangers? Is there any relevant standard? How should this situation be handled?
The shell-and-tube heat exchanger is similar to the floating-head heat exchanger, with its tube layout boundary circle determined by the floating end. The difference is that in the floating-head type, the floating end is determined by the loop flange, whereas in the stuffing-box type, it is determined by the tube section to which the floating end is connected. When determining its piping boundary circle, it is necessary to ensure that there is a certain gap between the welding joint of the outermost pipe and the tube sheet and the connected tube section; otherwise, welding will be difficult. It is recommended to use 20mm or more; of course, the larger the size, the better, as long as the heat exchange requirements are met. Hope it helps.
In my opinion, the piping limitation circle serves to define the range of the pipes, ensuring that there is a certain distance between the outer edge of the piping area and the inner diameter of the cylinder. However, in stuffing box-type heat exchangers, the piping area at the stuffing box end is always smaller than the inner diameter of the shell, which ensures that the piping area is less than the inner diameter of the cylinder; as a result, there is no piping limitation circle.
