I would like to ask fellow sailors: when using heat transfer oil for heating, should the flow control valve be installed on the inlet pipe or the outlet pipe?; In another scenario, when using circulating water for cooling, is the flow control valve installed on the inlet pipe or the outlet pipe? Is there any difference between installing the control valve at the inlet or at the outlet in these two cases?
When using heat transfer oil for heating, the flow control valve can be installed either on the inlet pipe or the outlet pipe; installing it on the inlet allows control over the flow rate of the heat transfer oil within the equipment using it, thereby increasing the residence time and enhancing the depth of heat exchange. Installing it at the outlet allows control of the return oil flow, which can also extend the residence time and increase the depth of heat exchange. The control of circulating water is the same; only the vaporization of water in the heat exchanger and the issue of scaling need to be taken into account.

But the *usual practice, or the conventional approach, is still to install it at the inlet. We can try to analyze the two different installations. Whether it is a \"throttle\" installed at the front or a \"pressure hold\" device installed at the back, a control valve serves the fundamental purpose of regulating flow rate. However, since it is installed at the inlet, heat exchange (whether heating or cooling) takes place in the return section of the heat transfer oil (circulating water), and the state changes (such as expansion, contraction, and especially potential gasification) have little impact on the oil supply (water supply) system.
