During my time in Haichuan, it seems there are very few instrument technicians here, and only half of the people ask about maintenance issues. Most of them mention materials and select equipment. What material should be used for this, and what type of flow meter should be used for that? Most of them are probably instrument engineers and management staff. There are also many people from design institutes; it would be great if I could work at one. I’d like to meet instrument technicians who are passionate about instruments; I wonder if there are any such people. Masters from the design institutes, could you share the principles behind designing instruments? I’ve worked with instruments for two years, and to be honest, I can only understand the complete principles of just two types of electrical instruments. They are thermal resistors and thermocouples, which have a simple structure and straightforward principles. It seems like there’s really nothing to fix with these instruments; when working on them, either the circuit board is damaged, or it’s clogged, frozen, or broken. It can’t be determined by appearance; it either needs to be sent back to the factory for repair. There’s not much creativity in doing routine instrument repairs; these days innovation is highly valued. How can there be innovation in instrument repair?
What qualities do you think a good instrument technician should have?
Let me give an example; think about it yourself. We have two devices here for reading information about train carriages – one for use with dynamic scales and the other for static scales. The control module of one of these devices is broken, which prevents the dynamic scale from identifying the car numbers; therefore, the information related to passing trains has to be entered manually. There are no spare parts available either. What should we do in such a situation? In the past, we would simply replace the faulty component, but this time the situation was urgent, so we had to find another solution. The control module seems quite complex, but its function is simply to activate the vehicle identifier when the computer receives a weight signal. So we used a cheap boat-shaped switch to replace that expensive module – by pressing the switch manually before weighing the carriage, automatic recording of vehicle information can be initiated. We used this switch with the static scale, while the control module from the static scale was used with the dynamic scale. Once new spare parts arrive, this isn’t really considered repair work, as nothing was actually fixed. But as a result, the users won’t keep pressing us to fix things, because their requirements have been met.
