How did people deal with the dirt and debris inside the tower before installing the packing in it? Are there any good methods? Let’s exchange ideas!
With the manhole open, of course we had to find a few guys to go in and take care of it...
What about the part on the middle tower wall? People can’t get up there. It’s possible to enter and clean the bottom of the tower, but what about the higher areas? Is water jetting being used for that? Maybe it’s powered by air; I’m not sure how effective it is!
If necessary, shelves can be installed inside the equipment.
It’s fine to use scaffolding for low towers, but it’s not very suitable for tall towers
According to SH’s regulations, the height difference on the platform outside the tower shall not exceed 5 meters. (An 8-meter height is allowed for heights below 15 meters.) So, the manholes are usually spaced at intervals of 5 meters, and ladders must be installed inside them; otherwise, it’s not convenient to work there.
The height of the tower isn’t a reason. I have worked on towers over 80 meters in length (CO2 removal towers of the EO/EG type), which are also packed towers with the same design. When the manhole is opened, someone has to go in to carry out the operations. Of course, I’m a carbon dioxide absorption tower – I’m not very dirty, so I guess it’s enough to steam me once, then rinse me with water, and finally someone can go in to check me. If there is a lot of dirt (for example, in a distillation tower; I’m giving the example of an absorption tower), manual cleaning is still required. Some people say that replacing the packing directly is also an option. But it’s still made cheap manually. Especially the workers in the factory – since they’re already idle, having them clean it up won’t increase costs. There’s also a tower about 100 meters away that needs the same treatment.
I’ve never built a tower that tall, but I guess since there’s a manhole, it’s meant for people to enter. For areas that are out of reach, a high-pressure water gun could be used, which might be more convenient.
What was said upstairs is correct – they opened the manhole and the guys went in to clean it. The 76-meter towers here are all cleaned one by one in this way.

Our tower is still empty; not much equipment has been installed inside it, only a little liquid level controller has been placed at the top! When the manufacturer carried out anti-corrosion treatment in the groove, a lot of sand was sprayed in!
