Is it still necessary to wrap PTFE tape when installing gasketing? Today we were conducting the routine checks and adjustments for the equipment. I noticed that some gasketing had been wrapped with PTFE tape before installation, which made me suspect there might be a problem with the sealing surface or the gaskets. I asked why that method was being used, and they explained it as an established practice; I’ve never seen it done this way during my years of working here. By the way, the medium in question is LPG. Are there such mounting gaskets?
This post was last edited by ylb913 on 2015-6-26 at 11:57. Wrapping pads are used on heat exchangers; the gaskets there are large, and there’s a risk of them getting scattered accidentally. It’s common to wrap them, but it’s not necessary, though there’s no harm in doing so either. Gaskets for pipeline flanges and manholes are rarely wrapped.

This is too cautious; it’s a waste.
It is not necessary to wrap PTFE tape around small gasketing materials; if there are defects, some PTFE tape can be wrapped around them.
When we use it, it doesn’t get twisted; the gasket design lacks inner or outer reinforcing rings, and if the quality of the spot welding is poor, it can indeed fall apart easily.

It’s generally not necessary; they use it to prevent leakage, but in reality, some sealant can be applied.

Wrapping the tape around it isn’t harmful, but it’s a bit of a waste of time and resources!
It’s not necessary for small flanges, but it is feasible to use them in situations with flowing fluids subject to shocks, such as in liquid-gas or gas-liquid mixtures where liquid slugs may occur
