This type of crude oil should have a relatively high specific gravity; materials with high specific gravity are more difficult to dehydrate. Moreover, inappropriate operating parameters for electrodialysis and demulsifiers lead to poor performance of the electrodialysis process, resulting in severe emulsification of the crude oil inside the tanks. It is important to contact demulsifier manufacturers and conduct screening tests on demulsifiers in order to select a model that is suitable for that specific crude oil. Additionally, by adjusting the temperature of the electrodialyzed crude oil, the optimal range for the specific gravity difference between the crude oil and water is determined, thereby accelerating the coalescence and sedimentation of water droplets. Reduce the mixing intensity, suspend water injection, and decrease the degree of crude oil emulsification. If the electrodialysis tank is designed with an emulsion removal process, it is advisable to remove the large amount of emulsion generated within the tank in order to improve its operating conditions. By taking the above measures and powering on the electric field supply, it is possible to maintain a stable operation of the electrodialysis system.
The temperature control for electrodesalination isn’t the higher, the better; it’s sufficient to find the optimal temperature based on the difference in specific gravity between oil and water. For heavy crude oil, around 145 degrees should be sufficient (of course, the properties of the crude oil also need to be taken into account). As for the allowable temperature range, it is generally determined by referring to the temperature limits that the components used in electrodesalination can withstand. For example, the insulating layer of the electrodes must be able to resist temperatures up to 160 degrees; to prevent the insulating material from aging and breaking down due to excessive heat, the operating temperature is usually set at no more than 150 degrees, thereby ensuring production safety. The yield of light oil is 25%-30%, while its acid value and sulfur content are high, as is the level of heavy metals. High currents are required during electrodialysis, and oil tends to be carried over during water separation; moreover, the product contains water after treatment. Adjustments should be made gradually – first, control the water content in the crude oil. It is necessary to consult the manufacturer to select an appropriate demulsifier. Keep the electrodialysis temperature between 135 and 140 degrees, not below 130 degrees. First reduce the mixing intensity to ensure proper water separation and minimize water contamination after treatment, then gradually adjust the salt content. Emulsification can easily occur during electrodialysis, so adjustments should be made slowly, with careful observation over an extended period of time – there is no need to rush the process.
It’s likely an overload protection issue with electrodialysis; you can increase the electrodialysis temperature and raise the amounts of water injected as well as the amount of demetallizing agent used. There is another method you can try: inject an appropriate amount of light diesel into the electrodesalination process to dilute the feedstock, thereby reducing the density of the crude oil and improving the efficiency of electrodesalination!

The processing of Maerui oil should not take place while payment is being made simultaneously. The temperature should be between 135 and 145 degrees, and the amount of water added should be around 6%. This amount can be adjusted depending on the actual level of desalination and the water content after desalination. The mixing intensity should be kept as low as possible at first; if necessary, a secondary line for the mixer can be used, and the mixing intensity can be increased gradually based on the conditions on site. There’s no need to rush, as once an emulsion layer forms, it is difficult to eliminate – usually, the only option is to discard that portion of the oil.
