Today, our company’s employees were unable to start the circulation compressor; the motor started smoking. Let’s discuss the startup methods and precautions with everyone. Accident details: Due to process requirements, my unit had to start the circulation compressor (system pressure: 80 kg; gas used: hydrogen; compression ratio of the unit less than 1.5) ; Series: Level 1) Open the inlet and outlet valves of the compressor (that is, allow air to flow between the inlet and outlet of the unit at a pressure of 80 kilograms). Once the equipment and instruments are in proper condition, press the start button; after 40 seconds, the motor began to smoke. It was found that the temperature of the motor’s stator exceeded 100 degrees, whereas it should normally be below 60 degrees. Accident analysis: After the accident occurred, there were two opinions. One group believed that there was nothing wrong with the starting method – they followed the operating procedures, arguing that as long as the inlet and outlet valves were open, it constituted a no-load start, and if the motor wouldn’t start, then it was a problem with the motor itself. The other group believed that the starting method was fundamentally incorrect; by “no-load” it meant that there was no pressure or only very little pressure inside the unit. Therefore, when starting the unit, it was necessary to ensure that the inlet and outlet valves were closed while the circuit was fully open – this is what is meant by a proper no-load start. I have always advocated the second method. I have verified it myself: the rated current of the motor that emits smoke is 52.4A, and the peak instantaneous current when the device is operating at full load (140 kilograms) is 18A. So it’s not a motor issue, nor is the motor configuration too small. Many people may think that there are many simple ways to start something up, but what exactly is the accurate, correct, and proper way to do it? I see there are many similar posts on HaiChuan as well, just like the ones I mentioned above; quite a number of people use the first method of starting the device. Whether this is correct or not, I’d like everyone to share their opinions.
The outlet valve should be opened after it has started operating.

Was the turbine rotated before startup, and are there any signs of jamming? I think 1/1 should be turned on; after starting the machine, slowly reduce 1/1 while simultaneously slowly opening the compressor outlet valve. Two people are needed to work together! When starting a reciprocating machine, the inlet valve should generally be fully open, as well as the return valve; after the compressor starts up; When the compression outlet pressure is greater than the outlet pipeline pressure, the outlet valve is opened and the compressor is integrated into the system.
For our high-pressure system as well, we first open the inlet and the circuit; once the startup pressure is reached, we then open the outlet. The system pressure is generally above 100, and there has been no motor overload issue, so I think the first approach is more reasonable.
