Can a centrifugal compressor operate for an extended period with the outlet completely closed, the vent fully open, and the guide vanes completely closed?
Such operation is not allowed; it is recommended not to run it in this way.
Under normal operating conditions, this should not be allowed, but during the startup phase of the compressor it operates without a load for a short period of time. I wonder what effects long-term exposure to such conditions might have on the compressor
Generally, devices are not allowed to run idle for long periods of time! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Why is it not allowed? Can you provide reasons to support this view?
A centrifugal compressor cannot operate for an extended period with the outlet completely closed, the vent completely open, and the guide vanes completely closed
It can operate without a load for a long time, but why would you do that? It’s better to just stop it~~to save power~~Many modern dumb devices work this way: when the system pressure is low, air supply is activated; once the pressure reaches the set value, the supply is stopped, resulting in frequent activation and deactivation~~
Operating under the conditions described by the poster is unsafe for at least one reason: once the inlet valve is fully closed, the operation of the compressor will draw in external substances into the compressor through the shaft seal. If the shaft seal is a mechanical seal, then sealing oil will enter the compressor; if it’s air outside, then air will be drawn in as well. If any foreign objects manage to get into the compressor, the consequences can be severe. So sometimes don’t fiddle around randomly; think carefully and operate the compressor strictly in accordance with its operation manual.
It cannot remain idle for long periods, as the shaft will move axially inside the housing when idle, which can damage the thrust bearings.
Operating the compressor for extended periods under conditions other than those for which it was designed can affect the service life of the rotor components, bearing components, and sealing components.
It is generally feasible. But it’s such a waste.
