Dry powder fire extinguishers have been installed on the tops of the distillation towers of some of our company’s older units; the operators responsible for these units must climb up to the towers twice a month to conduct inspections. Fire suppression steam systems are also in place in the distillation towers. During the safety inspection last week, it was found that no fire extinguishers were installed on the new unit tower built last year. When questioned, the workshop said that they weren’t included in the design from the start, claiming that this met the requirements. I think installing fire extinguishers on the tower platform is useless in case of a fire, and it also increases costs. I’d like to ask fellow sailors whether it’s necessary to have fire extinguishers, and if there are any regulatory requirements regarding this.
It’s rare to see such a thing done; as you said, even in the event of an emergency, who would be able to climb up onto the platform to get that fire extinguisher? ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
This is rare, but it does exist! It must have been taken into account during the design phase! Take a look at the specifications for the design of fire extinguisher installations! It’s not clear specifically.
It should be set. The main purpose of portable or cart-mounted fire extinguishers is to deal with incipient fires; if such fires are not extinguished in a timely manner, it becomes difficult to control them once they spread. So, it should be set up. As for what the original poster meant by a fire breaking out, it refers to a situation where the fire has already started; of course, in such a case one cannot rely solely on fire extinguishers. With the fire at this stage, it goes without saying that it’s impossible to get close to it or climb up there; even if one had a fire extinguisher, it’s likely impossible to put out the fire.
It’s better to do more things that are safe
I really haven’t seen fire extinguishers set up like this before. If it is indeed designed in this way, isn’t it too arbitrary? Has consideration been given to its use and maintenance?
I believe whether fire extinguishers should be installed on a tower platform depends on whether operators need to work there regularly. If people have to stay on that platform at all times, then having fire extinguishers available will allow fires to be extinguished in case they start.
