Hello everyone. Recently, in our company’s gasification furnace, there was a slag mass about 40 centimeters long attached to the inner wall of the downcomer, below the support brick tray. There was a gap of 2-3 centimeters between this slag mass and the downcomer, and the slag mass was quite hard. After removal, it was found that there was no problem with the downcomer quench ring. There is a large amount of ash accumulation in the area between the baffle and the furnace wall.

Is the moisture distribution in the quenching ring uneven? That shouldn’t be the case. If the water distribution is uneven, it should adhere to the inner wall of the downcomer; therefore, the downcomer must be damaged. Based on your description, the slag mass is likely hanging below the bricks at the bottom of the cone, as both the cooling ring and the downcomer are intact, and there is a distance between the slag and the downcomer. Then the problem arises: either the water distribution is uneven, or the operating temperature is too low, resulting in poor fluidity of the slag, which solidifies as soon as it exits the slag outlet But why is it just that one piece? It should be completely blocked; I don’t understand this. I’m hoping experts can provide an explanation!
It seems to be caused by uneven distribution of quench water; there is more quench water in this area, resulting in lower temperatures that affect the flow of slag.
