Dear sea friends, what technologies do you use for the degassing of liquid sulfur? How effective is it? Is it very smelly near the liquid sulfur tank? Our system is designed to consist of a liquid sulfur tank and a degassing tower; we haven’t used it before, and I’m not sure if others have used it either. What issues need to be taken into consideration?
I really want to understand this, but some companies and design firms are just misleading people – either by lying and exaggerating or by working with those design firms to make money.
Is your degassing tower equipped with a catalyst? It should be an imported process package. We used quinoline degassing, and the results were pretty good.
It’s not imported; I guess it’s the same as yours. Do you use liquid sulfur tanks in front of your degassing tower?
The biggest concern when using a degassing tower is a steam outage; if this occurs, it is necessary to first consider draining the liquid sulfur inside the tower.

Few designs now include the addition of quinoline; firstly, quinoline is toxic and not suitable for use in field operations, and secondly, its presence in liquid sulfur may have some impact on the quality of the product as well. Generally, the air bubbling method is used; only a small stream of air needs to be introduced from the sulfur production fan. Meanwhile, a cooler is used to reduce the temperature of the liquid sulfur to around 140°C, which is the temperature at which hydrogen sulfide has the lowest solubility in liquid sulfur. The degassing effect in this way is very good, achieving levels of <10 ppm, or even <5 ppm. Since air can also directly oxidize 60% of hydrogen sulfide into sulfur, using air for bubbling is much more effective than using other inert gases. For example, the air bubbling technique is used in the BV process package in Guangxi.

Is the air bubble degassing process you mentioned the Shell process used by Zhenhai Petrochemical? Can the hydrogen sulfide content after desulfurization reach 5 ppm? Are there any practical use cases? Was hydrogen sulfide detected in the liquid sulfur?
We use an ammonia injection cycle for degassing; after being pumped up by a liquid sulfur degassing pump, flashing is carried out to release the dissolved H2S, and the results are fairly good. The odor around the liquid sulfur tank is not strong, as long as the vent valve that leads to the atmosphere is not opened.
If the vent valve does not open, how can the pressure in the sulfur tank be balanced? Is it ammonia that’s being referred to, and what should be the control level for its amount?
