In evaporation systems, the seed method (using gypsum) is employed to prevent scaling in order to reduce softening costs. It is necessary to maintain a certain concentration of seeds in the system; a concentration of around 2% is appropriate (15–40 g/L is the empirically determined optimal concentration for seed control).

If it is arranged in this way, the concentrations of various components in the system may change, preventing them from remaining within the optimal seed concentration range.
