What are the ribs on the protective layer during insulation? Is it that bulged area on the protective layer? What is its function?

It’s the protective layer for ordinary pipes; for the large storage tanks in tank farms, you can see that debris-like shape mentioned. What do those protruding ribs refer to? There is a protrusion at each of the longitudinal and circumferential joints of the protective layer on ordinary pipes – does this also count as a rib? What is the function of the Namo protrusion? Also, the position of the screw is right next to this protrusion. I hope some expert can give me some advice. Thank you so much!
