Seeking help: What is the purpose of the UV valve installed at the inlet of the pump in the absorber tower of the Lurgi low-temperature methanol wash process (3.0 MPa) used for ammonia production?
I saw this at the inlet of the liquefied gas pump (at the outlet of the tank in front); it’s there to shut things off in case the pump seal fails suddenly. There should also be a control valve at the pump outlet.

Regarding the fire isolation cut-off, it’s unclear why it’s not present at the inlets of the other pumps, but only on the 3 sets of pumps in the distillation tower – this doesn’t seem to make any sense
There is a control valve at the pump outlet; I assume it is there to prevent cold methanol from the distillation tower from continuing to flow out through the pump in the event of an emergency shutdown, thereby avoiding damage to the heat exchanger at the pump outlet; Of course, it’s definitely also possible that the mechanical seal is damaged or there’s a sudden leak that causes it to shut down; I’m not sure if my understanding is correct. Is there a better explanation?
A gate valve and a check valve should be installed at the outlet of the centrifugal pump. The function of a gate valve is to open and close, while the function of a check valve is to prevent water hammer and backflow of water in the system when the pump is stopped.
