Several standards state that metal storage tanks should have a ring-shaped lightning protection grounding system, with no fewer than 2 grounding points, which should be arranged evenly or symmetrically along the perimeter of the tank; the distance between these grounding points along the tank’s circumference should not exceed 30 meters. There are also regulations stating that the distance between the perimeters of tank walls should not exceed 18 meters; under such rules, many storage tanks would fail to meet the standards.
The specifications are fine; how is it impossible to do it? There seems to be no requirement regarding the spacing of the circular lightning protection grounding along the circumference of the tank wall. For most of our storage tanks, the spacing between grounding points meets the requirement of being no more than 30 meters, but in most cases it does not meet the requirement of 18 meters. Isn’t the spacing of the down conductors the same as the spacing of the grounding points?
