As the title suggests, must an activated carbon filter be backwashed before use? This time, since backwashing was not performed before use, 1–2 hours after use the water coming out was turbid red in color, and the pH value increased from 7.5 to 9. What caused this? Previously, in other factories it was used directly without such problems occurring
If it is new charcoal, backwashing is still required. However, the main purpose of backwashing is to remove the carbon particles that are generated during production, transportation, and installation ； There is another purpose, which is not very obvious usually, and that is to remove some of the impurities present (especially water-soluble substances like iron ions); as a result, the pH value may also change slightly. So, turbidity should be inevitable ； Not quite sure about red (trivalent iron ions? What kind of product are you? I heard that iron hydrosulfide has a particularly red color ； The change in pH might be explained this way (what is your flow rate?)
