Coal tar; coal paste. National standard code: 32192; CAS number: 65996-93-2. Molecular formula: a mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic aromatic compounds containing nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur. It is a brown to black viscous liquid or semi-solid product obtained through the dry distillation of coal. There are high-temperature, medium-temperature, and low-temperature coal tar. It is a mixture of aromatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and heterocyclic aromatic compounds containing nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur; it comprises thousands of compounds, of which more than 370 have been isolated and identified, with most present in very low concentrations. Density is 1.18–1.23 g/cm3. Soluble in benzene, ether, dithiocarbene, chloroform, ethanol, and propanone; slightly soluble in water. It is obtained by condensing and separating the gas produced by the high-temperature decomposition of coal in a coking furnace. Used to produce phenols, naphthalenes, anthracenes, coumarins and resins, pyridines, quinolines and their derivatives, as well as washing oils, light solvent oils, asphalt, etc.
