Our company specializes in adsorption units. We currently have a project that requires us to provide the process design specifications (commonly known as a process package) for use by the design institute, so that they can carry out the full set of construction drawings. The design institute has put forward the following requirements for us: 1. A process flow diagram for the section handled by our company, including indications of the bottom (beam bottom), top, and water level of the tanks and other structures; representation of auxiliary structures, auxiliary rooms, and main equipment. For pipelines, it is necessary to indicate the starting and ending points of major pipelines such as process pipelines, sludge pipes, chemical dosing pipes, vent pipes, waste liquid pipes, and steam pipes. Additionally, we need to provide a hydraulic calculation report for the section handled by our company, so that we can calculate and verify the hydraulic flow within the entire wastewater treatment plant. 2. Some company is responsible for certain process calculation sheets (determination of design parameters). 3. The floor plan for a certain area under the responsibility of a company (including the dimensional specifications of structures or equipment, as well as the spacing between them). 4. The company in question is responsible for preparing the plan views of the pipeline layout in certain areas (including the planar positioning of the pipes, the locations where they connect to the overall system, the pipe materials, the methods of pipe connection, and the elevation of the pipes). 5. The drawings for various individual units and supporting facilities managed by a certain company, including the plan and sectional views of structures such as the adsorption effluent tank, desorption liquid tank, and UV disinfection channel, as well as the civil engineering drawings for the related advanced treatment processes (excluding ultrafiltration), meet the requirements of the construction drawing design guidelines. 6. A company is responsible for providing detailed dimension drawings and installation diagrams for some of the key equipment, such as adsorption towers, various chemical storage tanks, mixers, lift pumps, dosing units, flocculation tanks, neutralization tanks, etc. It also supplies a list of process equipment, which includes the basic parameters of each device, detailed descriptions of their functions, and information on their design and operating conditions. 7. Schematic diagrams of some process steps for a certain company: schematic diagrams of the systems for chemical dosing, adsorption, and subsequent wastewater treatment. 8. Provide the requirements for water quality parameters at the inlet side, as well as the water quality standards that can be achieved at the outlet side, for a certain company ； 9. A company is responsible for the detailed design drawings and schematic diagrams of the waste liquid treatment and steam systems, along with the related calculation documents. I was shocked after seeing it – we only provide the process conditions for the adsorption units; why do we have to handle the entire design? Is this still considered part of the design requirements? It seems more like a construction drawing design, along with calculation sheets. Is this something that should be handled by a design institute? Let’s all leave comments: 1. Is this requirement reasonable? 2. What kind of process package do you think we should provide? Are the design parameters and manufacturing process fairly reasonable? 3. Adsorption is mainly a chemical processing unit; how to prepare a calculation document for hydraulic processes? Is there a template? 4. How to prepare the calculation sheet for the steam system section? I’ve never done this before. Is there a template?
It makes sense; what you’re selling are process packages, and these packages come in different levels of detail. The simplest ones can be called calculation packages, while those with more detailed information are similar to construction drawings
Is that just our unit? Do other units also need construction drawings? What does that design institute design?
Each unit has slightly different conditions, and this depends on the depth of negotiation regarding your process packages. You only provide information up to the level of construction drawings, specifying the process requirements; the design institute then has to review these requirements and convert them into standard drawings and documents, taking into account aspects such as piping, instrumentation and electrical systems, civil works, cost estimates, and so on. All of these are tasks that fall on the design institute.

It makes sense – you are the technical party responsible for providing the process packages; if you don’t bring these up, the design institute won’t be able to proceed with its work. In fact, all they want are the requirements and condition diagrams; once the design institute obtains these, it still has a lot of work to do – it’s not that there’s nothing left to do. For example, after obtaining your process, he needs to calculate the pipe diameter and pipe material ； A detailed layout of the pipelines is prepared, pipe racks are installed, materials are quantified, and relevant requirements for various specialties are specified. Once the requirements for the architectural project are met, the design for evacuation, lighting, ventilation, fire compartments, and other aspects is refined in accordance with relevant standards and specifications. Once the requirements are met by the structural engineering team, modeling and calculations are carried out to design beams, columns, equipment foundations, embedment plates, etc. There are also designs for specialties such as electrical systems, instrumentation, heating, ventilation, water supply and drainage, external piping, and thermal engineering. So, don’t think that design institutes have nothing to do; there’s a lot of work to be done.
It seems to me that you don’t sell craft kits, but rather complete sets of equipment. This is basically our requirement for complete sets of equipment, but not for process packages.
In fact, it is you who must provide all the design requirements and documentation for the process packages (including drawings). The design institute then carries out further design work based on the provided technical data and requirements, to produce the design drawings. In other words, you do not have the qualifications to carry out design work; you need to use the design institute as a framework to accomplish this task.
The process package is just a condition; what he’s really asking for is the result of your work. So, if those elements are fitted with standards, can they then be considered design outcomes?
That’s spot-on. What was said above is very insightful, but the requirements put forward by this design institute are too detailed; some of them need to be further refined by the main design team during the design process – the process package cannot provide those details
Even though there are major equipment involved, they’re not being used for this design institute; it seems that companies without general contracting qualifications are handling the project
If you submit the documents for your process package in full compliance with the requirements specified in SHSG-052-2003, the design institute will not make any additional requests of you; at most, it may seek advice on successful practices
