Dear colleagues in the coking industry, please share what type and material is used for the ammonia condensers in the ammonia vaporization towers in your plants, as well as how effective they are. I’m using a tubular type made of 316L material; after just over a year of use, internal leaks occurred, which led to contamination of the circulating water, and frequent replacements were necessary. Due to the high temperatures and the interaction between gas and liquid phases, the ammonia vapor compression condenser is subject to significant corrosion; therefore, titanium is generally used as the material of choice, while 316L stainless steel is not suitable
Most vapor ammonia towers’ fractionators use titanium; high temperatures, corrosive media, and steam make stainless steel unsuitable

Generally, 316L is acceptable, but it depends on whether it is high-quality material; the difference can be significant. It won’t last even a week.
Using 316L for a year is already quite good; for an even better option, titanium materials should be considered.
At normal temperatures, if the chloride ion level is too high, 445J2 stainless steel can be used; it is cheaper than titanium materials. However, there is a limit to this – when the level is too high, titanium materials are the only option!
