The sludge used for inoculation was from a paper mill; under microscopic examination, rotifers and infusoria were present. Since no wastewater was introduced, aeration was carried out for nearly half a month. Both the anaerobic and aerobic sludges had a fine sandy (slurry-like) texture. Corn flour and diamines were added as nutrients. I’m not sure why flocculation did not occur in the absence of these additives. The sedimentation ratio of the aerobic sludge was close to 90%, while that of the anaerobic sludge was around 80%. I’m hesitant to remove more sludge yet as no water has been introduced. Have any of you encountered this situation before? Could it be a problem with the bacterial strain? Is it still because there’s too much mud and too little nutrients? Is there still any hope?
It’s basically beyond repair; just replace it gradually.
Based on your description, the sludge has aged; the reasons are firstly an excessive sludge age, Secondly over-aeration, and thirdly denitrification.
In this case, the SBR method can be adopted for intermittent operation
Nutrients need to be added, including C/N/P, and sludge removal must be carried out regularly; otherwise, the sludge will become inactive as described in your case
It is recommended to add nutrients, including C, N, and P; reduce aeration volume or duration, increase recirculation, and remove sludge promptly.
