Gas condensate, in English, is a liquid product that forms as a result of reverse phase condensation when it is brought to the surface from reservoirs where it exists in a supercritical state under high pressure and high temperature conditions. It refers to the liquid phase components that condense from the natural gas in condensate gas fields, also known as natural gasoline. Its main components are a mixture of hydrocarbons with carbon atoms from C5 to C8, and it contains small amounts of hydrocarbons with more than C8 atoms, as well as impurities such as sulfur dioxide, thiophenes, thiolues, sulfides, and polysulfides. Its boiling points range mostly between 20 °C and 200 °C, giving it good volatility; it is therefore an excellent raw material for producing solvent oils. The characteristic of condensate oil is that it exists in a gaseous state underground, but turns into a liquid state once it is brought to the surface of the tank. Condensate is liquid oil at the surface, but it is a gas in the reservoirs, known as condensate gas. Condensate gas is a mixture formed when oil is dissolved in natural gas under high temperature and pressure conditions. Condensate reservoirs are located in rocks several kilometers deep underground, and the main products obtained from their exploitation are condensate oil and natural gas.
On March 26, 2008, China’s largest discovered condensate gas field to date, the Dina 2 gas field, officially began construction. Once completed, it will become another major source of gas for the West-to-East Gas Transmission project, enabling the Tarim Oil Field to provide a safe and stable supply of gas to this project. The Dina 2 gas field is located in Kuche County and Luntai County in southern Xinjiang, and consists of two blocks: Dina 1 and Dina 2. The total proven geological reserves of natural gas amount to 175.218 billion cubic meters, while the reserves of condensate oil amount to 13.389 million tons. This is the second large gas field in the Tarim Basin with a production volume of over 100 billion cubic meters, following the Kela 2 gas field, which is the largest source of gas for the West-East Gas Transmission Project. The production capacity expansion project for the Dina 2 gas field is scheduled to be completed in June 2009, after which it will begin supplying gas to the West-East Gas Transmission Project. Once completed, the gas field will be able to produce 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year, 560,000 tons of condensate, and 4.5 million tons of oil-equivalent. On September 1, 2004, the Tarim Oil Field began supplying gas to the West-East Gas Transmission Project. By March 2008, it had delivered over 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas to more than 80 cities in 12 provinces and municipalities in North and East China, with Beijing and Shanghai as key centers. This supply ensured the daily gas needs of industrial enterprises as well as over 200 million people, replaced more than 36 million tons of standard coal, and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by over 90 million tons. At the same time, the five regions in southern Xinjiang – Hotan, Kashgar, Kizilsu Prefecture, Aksu, and Bactrian Prefecture – have all begun to use natural gas produced by oil fields, which has effectively protected the fragile ecological environments in these areas and promoted their comprehensive economic and social development. Zhou Xinyuan, general manager of China National Petroleum Corporation’s Tarim Oilfield Company, said that the Tarim Oilfield has identified a total geological reserve of natural gas amounting to 925.5 billion cubic meters, which is sufficient to ensure an annual production of 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas and to provide a stable supply for the West-East Gas Transmission project for over 20 years. At present, the Tarim Oil Field is intensifying its exploration efforts in an effort to discover large gas fields similar to Kr2, with proven reserves of over 200 billion cubic meters, thereby further strengthening the resource base for the West-East Gas Pipeline Project.
