The variable frequency control signal for the pump is 4~20mA; this signal is sent via the DCS to enable variable frequency control. May I ask whether this 4–20mA signal is typically intrinsically safe or explosion-proof? Are both situations possible?
4~20mA is just an electrical signal; it has nothing to do with intrinsically safe or explosion-proof concepts as you mentioned! Intrinsic safety and explosion protection are methods for protecting electrical equipment!
