The extraction steam turbine (6M) tripped without any apparent reason; it produced a harsh noise during the shutdown process. It operated normally during the first three minutes after shutdown, but its idle speed decreased rapidly and significantly thereafter, with this slowdown occurring within less than ten minutes in total. After stopping, the cranking was initiated, but the cranking motor tripped. After manual cranking, the motor resets and can be cranked again. I wonder, gentlemen, what’s going on here? Is the steam engine damaged? Can we try running it first or should we figure out the cause first? The temperatures of each bearing shell are normal, and the shaft displacement is normal. Vibration is a bit higher during coasting than when running, but it hasn’t exceeded the limit. Thank you
It’s a bit like friction occurring between moving and stationary parts.
It is recommended to conduct a startup inspection; a reduced idling time, screeching noises, and sudden stops during shaft rotation all indicate friction inside the machine. To determine the cause of these stops, one should not start the machine rashly.
