China’s first isononyl alcohol production facility was built and put into operation in Maoming

On October 12, 2015, the world-class isononanol production facility, jointly built by Sinopec and BASF, began operations in the Maoming High-Tech Industrial Development Zone. The facility is operated by Maoming Sinopec BASF Co., Ltd., a Sino-German joint venture established with 50:50 equity shares held by both parties, and is capable of producing 180,000 tons of isononanol per year. This is the first set of isononyl alcohol production facilities in the country, and it will meet the growing market demand for the new generation of plasticizers. The commissioning of this facility marks another milestone in the long-term cooperation between Sinopec and BASF. Yu Xizhi, chairman of Maoming Sinopec BASF Co., Ltd., said: “Maoming Sinopec is one of Sinopec’s largest refining and chemical enterprises at present. Over the past few years, the company has seen continuous improvements in management, deeper reforms, and advancements in technology, maintaining the highest economic efficiency among Sinopec’s refineries and chemical plants of similar scale. In particular, with the steady implementation of its ‘three-step’ development strategy, the company is getting closer and closer to its goal of becoming a world-class large-scale integrated refining and chemical enterprise.” BASF is a leading global chemical company with strong technical advantages and economic strength. Our medium-term goal is to have 75% of the products sold by BASF in the Asia-Pacific region produced locally. ” Once put into operation, this world-class isononanol production facility will meet the growing market demand for the next generation of plasticizers. It is understood that isononyl alcohol is primarily used in the production of high-molecular-weight phthalate plasticizers such as diisononyl phthalate (DINP). As high-molecular-weight phthalate plasticizers such as DINP gradually replace low-molecular-weight phthalate plasticizers, demand for isononyl alcohol is expected to increase further in the coming years. DINP is widely used in industrial fields such as automobiles, cables, flooring, and construction. Sinopec has established a long-term partnership with BASF. As early as 2000, the two parties established a joint venture in a 50:50 ratio – Yangzi Petrochemical BASF Co., Ltd.
