I graduated with a master’s degree 13 years ago in the field of chemical engineering. My child is now one year old. I have been working for over two years, but there hasn’t been much progress in my career. I work in a private company dealing with chemical design; I work five days a week, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, in Nanjing, it takes more than an hour to get to and from work, so in effect I’m working from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The overall business environment isn’t good, and there aren’t many projects available, so my salary is average. I recently interviewed for a position at a private company that develops process packages. The salary level remains roughly the same, but the workplace is only a dozen minutes away from home; however, work is done on a single-day schedule with rest on other days. Friends who have established families and careers, please give some advice – what are the prospects for this new job? Do I need to change jobs?
It’s not for design; you can’t tell! But it’s always good to be close to home
I’m not that pessimistic about chemical engineering design; there are both good and bad aspects in the industry’s development process. But you’ve only graduated for 1 or 2 years; it’s fine if it’s close to home, and your income won’t decrease much either.

It is necessary to investigate the prospects of the process package development in question – does the company offering such packages have mature process packages available? If the goal is merely to sell process packages, then strong technical capabilities and favorable industry prospects are essential; or else, the process packages should be used as a starting point, along with key equipment or under a turnkey contract model. This analysis is based solely on technical and developmental considerations
They have mature process packages and their own equipment, but they do not provide turnkey projects; their main business is selling process packages. The prospects are good, especially for carrying out modifications
It’s a private company, there’s no increase in income, and work is only on single days; moreover, with the overall economic situation being poor, is it really safe to work for a private company that develops process packages? ?
I can’t save much time every day; my salary remains the same, I’m going from having two days off per week to just one, the nature of the company hasn’t changed, and my personal preference regarding work also stays the same!
Don’t change it; I laugh as soon as I hear about changing it. Do you still need to sell a process package for that? It’s well-known technology; at most it involves isothermal transformation, and it’s not yet fully developed
