How to perform alignment calculations when the coupling diameter and the distance between the motor’s front and rear feet are unknown

As the title says. On site, I saw that the experienced workers just get it right right away; they seem to know exactly how much padding to add. How do they do that?:)
Based on the existing alignment deviation, estimate empirically...
