8-Year Work Summary

Self-analysis in design is a task that requires care and patience. First, it is necessary to have a thorough understanding of the design elements, then to carefully analyze relevant data and perform precise calculations. Finally, the results need to be verified, and the data transformed into drawings. Design is also a task that involves communicating with people; it requires communicating with the client to understand their intentions, communicating with designers to convey the objectives of the design, and communicating with the construction team to clarify the content of the drawings. During the design process, I was able to ensure the accuracy of the design data and maintain smooth communication with the client. But it also isn’t perfect enough. There are various problems. Firstly, the initial design proposals need to be adjusted accordingly based on the owner’s ideas at different stages, and this process is relatively long and cumbersome. By the time it comes to the conceptual design and detailed design, the timeline provided by the client is usually quite tight; they want the approval to be given today so that the installation can be put into operation the very next day. During the design process, design changes occur frequently due to variations in the plans or changes in the information provided by the client, as well as issues with the drawings themselves. How to understand the owner’s objectives as thoroughly as possible, clarify the design requirements, reduce design changes, and coordinate a reasonably appropriate design timeline are areas that need further improvement in the future.

Secondly, design is a job with a high degree of interactivity. Basically, no designer ends up with only one design task to handle; they usually work on several projects at the same time. Sometimes none of the projects are urgent, while at other times several projects need to be handled at the same time. The design work at this time is a bit like the game of \"whack-a-mole\": today one project is urgent and needs to be worked on first, then tomorrow another project comes with an urgent request, so work on that instead. At my busiest, I had three feasibility studies and one basic design requirement that needed to be completed within a week. How to make a reasonable allocation in a targeted manner is also an area that needs improvement. Secondly, design is a task that involves continuous learning and the accumulation of experience. During the design process, new problems keep arising; it is necessary to continuously learn new knowledge to solve them, as well as to use experience to assess these problems. Now, I feel that my desire for new knowledge isn’t as strong as it used to be; my motivation to learn is lower, and I have more distractions. There’s no longer that excitement and focus from when I first started working. It’s similar to driving a new car – you’re excited and also cautious at the same time ； After two years, one might feel a bit tired and have reduced focus, but gain more experience; driving would then seem like just a convenient tool. I’m probably at that stage right now. Finally, design is a task that requires both mental and physical effort. Most of the time, the work routine basically consists of business trips, overtime, more business trips, and more overtime. The workload has always been extremely heavy; a good physical condition is essential to be able to do design work. In the future, I need to get my condition in order and improve my physical fitness, for both my work and my family.

Project Summary: The main projects I have been responsible for in recent years include: the upgrade of the quality of gasoline and diesel at China National Petroleum Corporation’s Jilin Petrochemical Branch, as well as the renovation of the II atmospheric and vacuum distillation units and the 1.2 million tons per year catalytic gasoline hydrodesulfurization unit； Jiangsu Fenglin Industrial Co., Ltd.’s 2 million tons per year heavy oil deep processing and related projects – 200,000 tons per year gas separation unit ； Sinochem Hongrun Petrochemical Co., Ltd.: 600,000 tons per year gas fractionation and MTBE combined plant along with related facilities; 600,000 tons per year gas fractionation plant ； Flue gas desulfurization unit of Unit II catalytic cracking plant at Harbin Petrochemical Company, China National Petroleum Corporation ； Flue gas desulfurization unit of Unit III catalytic cracking plant at Harbin Petrochemical Company, China National Petroleum Corporation ； Flue gas desulfurization unit for catalytic cracking unit at Dagang Petrochemical Company of China National Petroleum Corporation (feasibility study, infrastructure construction) ； Flue gas desulfurization unit of Unit III catalytic cracking plant at China National Petroleum Corporation Jinzhou Petrochemical Company ； Daqing Oilfield Chemical Co., Ltd. – Project for Upgrading the Mixed Hexane Products to Meet Standards: 30,000 tons per year production capacity for mixed hexane (Feasibility Study) ； Shandong Jincheng Chemical Technology Co., Ltd.’s MZRCC co-production EPM project and its associated 250,000 tons per year gas fractionation unit. Smaller scale: Feasibility study and basic design for hydrogen-rich gas recovery at Jilin Petrochemical Company’s refinery ； Feasibility study for desulfurization and denitration project of Harbin CFB boilers ； Replacement of the air preheater in the heating furnace of the delayed coking unit at Jilin Petrochemical Company’s refinery ； Zhongjie Petrochemical flue gas desulfurization project. Looking back on 8 years of design work, I have completed over 30 projects of various sizes. Upon reviewing these projects, it is evident that they still have various shortcomings, and there are many areas that need improvement and refinement. But that’s the nature of design: there is no optimal solution, only the best one. In the future, no matter what other projects I undertake, I will strive to achieve the best possible results. Looking ahead to the 8 years of design work ahead, it’s neither a long nor a short period of time; through hard work, I have achieved success in various aspects, with a smooth career and a happy family, and I have entered a stable phase in my life. As a result, the focus and enthusiasm for work have decreased, the motivation to learn on one’s own has waned, and I have reached a bottleneck in my personal development. This made me feel uneasy and confused, and it prompted me to reflect on myself in order to find a new goal for life. Looking to the future, how can one improve one’s abilities once again, achieve personal breakthroughs, and accomplish something meaningful. Creating a better future for work, for life, and for my family is another of my goals.
