Stop the vacuum pump first, then stop the steam seal. If the steam seal is stopped first, impurities can easily be drawn in, damaging the labyrinth seal.

The exhaust pump mentioned by the original poster is probably the one located above the steam seal cooler, not the steam ejector at the recondenser; so it has nothing to do with the vacuum level
