It is said that the function of micro-electrolysis is to break the molecular chains of pollutants, thereby improving the efficiency of subsequent biochemical treatment. Microelectrolysis itself has very limited effectiveness in removing COD.

The effectiveness of iron-carbon microelectrolysis depends, on the one hand, on the specific application, and on the other hand, on the material itself. It is primarily used for pre-treatment of wastewater with high COD levels, and it exhibits a significant effect in breaking the bonds of large molecular organic compounds. When combined with hydrogen peroxide to form the Fenton reaction, its efficiency is much higher than that of the Fenton reaction alone. Together, these two elements help to regulate the B/C ratio; the optimal ratio to hydrogen peroxide requires continuous experimentation on-site to be determined, and it usually falls within a certain range, unless the quality of the wastewater remains consistently stable. A removal rate of 30% through iron-carbon microelectrolysis is also acceptable; however, usually such high rates can achieve 40%-50%. This depends greatly on the quality of the water – if the water contains compounds like phenol, which are cyclic in structure, it becomes more difficult to treat it, so a removal rate of 30% is still acceptable.
Micro-electrolysis is primarily used to increase the B/C ratio of water, which enables the subsequent biochemical treatment process to achieve a high removal rate of COD. There is no fixed optimal ratio for using these two types of chemicals by Fenton; the amount of chemical to be added certainly varies depending on the water quality. It’s best to do a small test on-site and then scale it up actually there.
