Dear experts, I have a question: in chemical engineering projects, when are tower equipment, heat exchangers, and reaction vessels generally purchased – during the basic design phase, the detailed design phase, or already at the process planning stage?
We are currently involved in a project. The client is now in the equipment procurement phase; they are carrying out civil construction work. The design agency has already prepared the layout for the factory building. At this stage, final design decisions regarding the production processes and the placement of equipment are being made
Long-cycle equipment is generally purchased at the detailed design stage. For tower equipment, its internal components should be ordered before the purchase of the tower’s shell; the determined diameter of the tower and the relevant equipment specifications are then provided to the manufacturer of the tower shell. Tower equipment is considered to have a long lead time; procurement usually begins during the detailed design phase. Moreover, the design drawings and weight of the tower equipment influence the design of the civil structure.
