Question: For producing pure water, we need nitrogen gas for nitrogen sealing. We require a flow rate of 10–20 cubic meters per hour, with a purity level of 99.9996% and a pressure of 0.6–0.8 MPA. We currently purchase liquid nitrogen externally; now we want to produce it using a nitrogen generator. This can be achieved in three ways: 1. Achieve purity in one step. 2. Achieved through hydrogenation purification. 3. Implementation of combustion-based purification. Due to the relatively small size of the equipment, it is recommended to achieve purity using a one-step process. Given the low usage volume and high purity requirements, the cost of investing in nitrogen production equipment is very high. If the usage is not several thousand cubic feet per hour, it is not recommended to use a nitrogen generator. For a flow rate of 10–20 cubic meters per hour, it is entirely possible to handle the situation on-site using equipment consisting of a liquid nitrogen tank, a vaporizer, and a purifier. Whether it is purity or dosage, the required levels can be easily achieved. Your company can completely delegate the entire task to a relevant gas company to carry out the work.

Look for larger electronics companies; the purity of liquid nitrogen they produce is generally less than 1 ppm, which fully meets your purity requirements. It’s still better to use a storage tank, pump, and vaporizer – the quantity you need is so small that it’s not cost-effective to set up a system on your own.

Some time ago I consulted several manufacturers of nitrogen generators, and they told me that the most commonly used technology is pressure swing adsorption, or PSA nitrogen generation technology – this involves first separating nitrogen, then increasing its pressure; if liquid nitrogen is needed, it is liquefied. Your application requires a low flow rate, which is similar to what I inquired about. The cost for nitrogen is around 60,000 yuan or so, while the cost for liquid nitrogen is even higher. Additionally, higher purity levels result in higher costs. According to those manufacturers, the purity of both the liquid nitrogen and gaseous nitrogen produced by the generators is the same, and the operating costs are not very high, with the compressor being the main cost factor.
Your pure nitrogen generator can achieve this, but it consumes more air compared to other options. The supporting equipment includes air compressors, cold dryers, front and rear filters, as well as front and rear buffer tanks. Operating costs mainly include electricity, molecular sieves, and filters. You can consult the nitrogen generator manufacturers about the initial investment cost and operating costs. For a flow rate of 10-20 m3/h, I think using liquid nitrogen would be more convenient
Is the purity requirement that high? For PSA, the highest yield for the one-step process is 99.999%! If those requirements can be met, the cost isn’t that high. How much is liquid nitrogen per T? If liquid nitrogen is cheap, there’s no need for a nitrogen generator!
