I ran into a problem recently! ! ! What type of welding wire should be used for TIG welding of 16MnDR? One opinion is that ER50-6 will suffice, as long as the weld evaluation can be conducted at -40 degrees. Another way of putting it: those who advocate for using the low-temperature welding wire ER55-C1 rather than ER50-6 argue that even if the welding can be performed at -40 degrees, ER50-6 should not be used, as its suitable operating temperature is only -30 degrees.

First, we need to consider the normal operating temperature of the product; this is generally the design temperature. If it’s above -30°C, using 16MnDR would be somewhat overkill. Choosing ER50-6 as the welding material poses no major problems. However, if the temperature drops below -40°C, opting for ER50-6 becomes rather risky; it’s best to avoid doing so. Although the impact values at -40°C for both the weld and heat-affected zone might still meet the requirements set for 16MnDR, the former has a higher impurity content and inferior toughness compared to the latter. Moreover, very few manufacturers produce materials suitable for such low temperatures—only a handful do. But can you really trust them? After all, the impurity content is quite high there. The ER50-G wire can be chosen; it is the model agreed upon by both the buyer and the seller. The composition and properties can be negotiated, such as the impurity content or the impact resistance at -40 degrees Celsius. This type of wire is available on the market as well, and everything is fine as long as an agreement is reached and the corresponding quality certificate is provided. Choose ER55-C1; it has a higher strength level than ER50, and this generally does not violate the standards, as these standards require that the mechanical properties of the weld be equal to or greater than those of the base material. This is also often done in practice, but don’t set it too high. Also, this type of welding wire is generally a bit more expensive.
