Recently, I saw a steam compressor (with an outlet pressure of no more than 2 bar) whose volute was actually welded together. Is it possible to do this? Can’t we use casting?
It actually depends mainly on the level of precision required; both casting and welding methods are viable.
High-pressure casting? Welding at low pressure?

In my opinion, when the changes are minor, casting is usually used, while welding is employed when the changes are significant. This is related to the requirements of your owner, as well as the complexity of the manufacturing process employed by the manufacturer.
Sure, these days many volutes of large steam turbines are welded; as long as the welding process is proper, that’s fine
