At the end of my 8th year, I signed up to go to school along with other children my age. At that time, the proletarian revolution was at its peak in the rural areas. My first teacher was named Song Zengtu; he was a highly qualified and responsible educator. However, due to the chaos of the revolution, it was not allowed to call him “teacher” – one could only use his name. As a result, that name remains firmly engraved in my memory after all these decades. At that time, my family was poor; there were several children in the family who needed food and other necessities, and there was no money to buy books. The teacher still allowed me to attend school, assigned me a seat, and I continued to have classes as usual. However, without money, no books could be provided to me. I had no books during the first semester, and in the second semester I managed to buy only one arithmetic book. However, the teacher did not look down on us because we were poor; instead, the teacher taught and treated us equally. Once, the teacher asked everyone to read a text; only those who finished reading could go home for dinner. I didn’t have a book, so I had to borrow one from my deskmate. After finishing reading, I wanted to leave, but my deskmate wouldn’t let me go until I taught him how to read. When the teacher found out, she forced my deskmate to let me go. This incident left a deep impression on me; even after decades, it still seems like it happened just yesterday. I am grateful to my first teacher; it was he who prevented us from wasting our time on nonsense and who enabled us to acquire the most basic knowledge. I will always remember the name of this teacher who taught me the basics – Song Zengtu.
