However, these two compressors do not operate in a one-active-one-redundant configuration; they have different functions, but the working medium is roughly similar. Is it acceptable to name them in this way? Is any standard mentioned? Thank you
It is not appropriate to use the same tag number for equipment in different processes, while also distinguishing between A/B. A/B or 1, 2 generally correspond to different transformers, which also makes it easier to remember; for example, A or 1 is usually powered by Transformer No. 1.
It’s possible that these two compressors are identical, with only different functions. Purchasing makes things easier, but clear distinctions are needed for on-site operations.

Generally, design institutes are not capable of designing compressors; typically, the requirements for compressors are specified by the process team, who then contact manufacturers to get quotes. After communication between the manufacturer and the process team, the manufacturer prepares the drawings and carries out the manufacturing. So, are the two compressors mentioned above exactly identical? That’s why a single identifier was used in the process design PID and during the quotation process; the manufacturer provided only one set of drawings. I’m not sure if this understanding is correct.
Let me add my opinion as well: First, it is necessary to determine whether these two compressors have the same model number (even though their functions are different). If that’s the case, the possible issue is that the engineering team assigned codes of A/B when assigning numbers to the equipment; although this approach isn’t rigorous, it does occur in practice. Secondly, if the models of these two compressors are different, it is not possible to use the A/B method for coding. Even if there were errors in the numbering at an earlier stage, it will still need to be corrected later; at that point, it is no longer a matter of whether the approach is rigorous or not.

Although the functions are different, using A/B to distinguish them when the media is different is certainly not feasible; the numbers should be reassigned. But if you have already put it into use, it should be rather troublesome to make changes, after all, a lot of information has already been recorded.
