In compressed air pipelines, solenoid valves are often used for control. Solenoid valves generally come in single-acting and double-acting types. Could someone explain the principles behind each type as well as their typical applications? Thank you
This post was last edited by ylb913 on 2016-2-1 at 12:56. A single-acting cylinder is actuated by air on one side and returned to its original position by a spring on the other side. A double-acting cylinder is actuated on both sides by air; there are no springs inside the cylinder. A single-acting solenoid valve is reset by a spring on one side while being actuated by electromagnetic force on the other side; a double-acting solenoid valve is actuated by electromagnetic force on both sides.
In the event of a power outage, a double-acting solenoid valve keeps the valve in its original position and prevents freezing; a single-acting solenoid valve must either open or close when air is supplied.

Single-acting type controls one gas line, while double-acting type can control two gas lines simultaneously. The single-acting type has a spring at one end and a magnet at the other; when there is a magnetic field, it moves in the direction of the magnet, and when the magnetic field disappears, the spring returns it to its original position. It has magnetism at both ends; when one end has a magnet, the other end does not have any magnetism. Magnetism cannot be present at both ends, which prevents it from functioning

First of all, the terms \"single-acting\" and \"double-acting\" refer to pneumatic valves; the pilot solenoids used with them correspond to two-position three-way solenoids and two-position five-way solenoids. Pilot solenoids are generally single-coil, while those with double coils are known as three-position five-way solenoids. Pilot solenoids can be used independently or as part of a valve island setup. A single-acting cylinder has a spring on one side of it, which allows it to close on its own. Double-acting cylinders do not have springs.
