First, install a flow meter at the site that is capable of transmitting 4-20mA signals; some flow meters are two-wire type and thus do not require any power supply considerations, while those that are four-wire type need a separate switch in the control room to supply power to them. Next, the flow meter transmits the 4-20mA signal to the control room, where it is sent to the DCS cards (which can receive 4-20mA signals) via a safety barrier (in an intrinsically safe environment). Finally, configurations are carried out within the DCS system: configuration of control points, configuration of card channels, and configuration of the process diagram interface. After these steps, the flow data is displayed on the DCS monitoring screen.
