There is currently a Roots blower used to handle steam as the medium; its pressure-raising capacity is 20 kPa, and the pressure in the system after pressurization reaches 85 kPa(a). Is it necessary to install a safety valve under such operating conditions? If a safety valve needs to be installed, is the discharge port of the safety valve the return inlet?
May I ask what the purpose is of using this Roots blower to convey steam?
I don’t think a safety valve is necessary here; is the concern about pressure buildup downstream in the pipeline? If that’s the case, it’s better to release it into the atmosphere. In the event that the safety valve opens, a large amount of steam pressure entering the inlet can still cause significant damage to the fan.
If the system is under pressure and the Roots blower motor cannot be driven, could this lead to an overcurrent that damages the motor?

Their characteristic is that, within their maximum design pressure range, the flow rate changes very little even when pipeline resistance varies; they thus have strong operational flexibility, making them suitable for applications where a stable flow rate is required despite significant variations in resistance. ” After the Roots blower experiences pressure buildup, the motor will quickly experience overcurrent; therefore, a relief safety valve is usually installed, and some systems are equipped with automatic pressure-regulating valves.
A safety valve should be installed to prevent the rotor from flipping over during the adjustment of the fan, which could damage the casing.
There is no need to install a safety valve, but a steam trap should be installed at the lower part of the outlet pipe. Since the temperature at the outlet of the Roots compressor can easily rise too high, spray water is introduced into the system; moreover, some steam condenses as well. The steam trap helps to remove this water promptly, thereby preventing damage to the fan’s drum.
It depends on the requirements; it seems to be pretty good.
