It’s mainly the concentration of the raw materials and the type of process used! The concentration of raw materials for coalification is relatively low, whereas petrochemical production primarily relies on the Claus + hydrogenation process!
Compared to the petrochemical industry, the coal chemical industry has a higher likelihood of containing, or higher levels of, sulfur-containing organic compounds such as thiol and thioether compounds in its acidic gases, making treatment very challenging. Simply using the Claus and SCOT processes is generally insufficient for removing these compounds, which can have a significant impact on amine solution absorption; it may lead to the degradation of the amine solution or foaming, and it also imposes a heavy burden on SO2 emissions from the exhaust gases.
