There is also another common concentration parameter: the Maximum Allowable Concentration (MAC). So, what is the Maximum Allowable Concentration? GBZ2.1-2007 \"Occupational Exposure Limits for Hazardous Factors in the Workplace _ Part 1 _ Chemical Factors\" defines the maximum allowable concentration as the level that toxic chemical substances shall not exceed at the workplace at any time during a working day.
The maximum allowable concentration refers to the concentration of harmful substances in the environment that is permitted in countries such as China and the Soviet Union; it is a concentration that must not be exceeded after multiple representative sampling tests. At this concentration, harmful substances in the environment can act directly or indirectly on humans throughout their lives without causing health damage or mental disorders (including potential or temporary compensatory states), nor can any changes in physiological responses that indicate maladaptation be detected using modern medical testing methods in either the current generation or future generations. For harmful substances in workshop air, surface water, drinking water, food, and soil, only maximum allowable concentrations are generally established, while for harmful substances in the atmosphere, two types of maximum allowable concentrations are set: the one-time maximum allowable concentration (referring to the maximum allowable value for any single measurement) and the daily average maximum allowable concentration (referring to the maximum allowable value for the average concentration over a day). The former is the concentration limit for preventing acute harmful effects due to instantaneous exposure, whereas the latter is the concentration limit for preventing chronic toxic effects.
MAC: Maximum allowable concentration. In toxicology, the MAC refers to the concentration of a certain exogenous chemical in the air at the workers’ work locations in a workplace that must not be exceeded. At this concentration, workers engaged in production work for extended periods will not suffer from any acute or chronic occupational hazards. In the living environment, MAC refers to the limit standards for toxic substances in the media of air, water bodies, and soil. The most sensitive individuals among those exposed will not suffer any harmful effects, either for themselves or their offspring, from being exposed to this level of exogenous chemicals immediately or throughout their lives.
