If one of a pair of flanges is made of cast iron, bronze, or some other cast material, the fastening elements should be made from a material suitable for flanges of lower strength. I’m new to chemical engineering design; how should I understand this sentence?
It is presumed that in the absence of high pressure, it is cost-effective

To prevent overload, high-strength materials cannot be used.

My understanding is that the fasteners for pipeline components are selected based on the principle of choosing the lowest possible option. One of the two flanges is made of cast iron; the other flange has high strength, and high-strength bolts can be used for that flange as well. High-strength bolts that can be used with another flange are not suitable for cast iron flanges. Considering the overall sealing performance of the piping assembly as well as its safety, fasteners made from materials suitable for flanges of lower strength should be used.
Excessive tightening force on cast iron flanges can cause them to break; high-strength bolts should not be used.
