Yesterday, reporters learned from the customs that over 12,000 shirts exported by a textile company in Shantou to the EU were returned by foreign buyers because the level of nonylphenol (APEO) in the fabric exceeded the allowed limits. The APEO content in this batch of goods reached 2,500 mg/kg, which is nearly three times the EU standard; 12,300 shirts had to be returned, resulting in a loss of 60,000 euros. The company not only suffered heavy losses but also had to face compensation claims from the foreign buyer for breach of contract. The company conducted an immediate thorough investigation of its dye and chemical suppliers, carrying out a comprehensive inspection of all chemicals used in the various production processes, including pretreatment agents, dyes, auxiliaries, softeners, and more. It was found that a raw material used by the dye factory, called fatty acid methyl ester ethoxylate FMEE, was responsible for the severe excess of APEO in the fabric. According to industry experts in the chemical sector, FMEE, which is manufactured using mixed methyl petroleum acids as raw materials, inevitably contains by-products such as APEO
