What are the phenomena of methanol synthesis catalyst poisoning? If the catalyst is poisoned, how can the toxins present in it be analyzed? How should catalyst samples be taken during shutdown of the synthesis process (mainly to prevent air from entering)?

Poisoning of methanol synthesis catalysts is usually caused by sulfides and chlorides; If the catalyst is poisoned, it can be subjected to elemental analysis to determine whether toxic elements such as sulfur are present in it ; Sampling can be carried out while the system is stopped; the catalyst can be passivated first before starting the reactor to take samples.
In the first step, factors such as the reaction conditions, bed temperature, the net alcohol content at the outlet of the synthesis tower, and specific consumption rates are examined to determine the extent to which the catalyst’s activity has declined. Subsequently, the sulfur content in the feed gas or the gas exiting the tower is analyzed. In the second step, the tower is shut down and nitrogen is used to protect the environment while samples of the catalyst are taken and sent to a laboratory for chromatographic analysis, in order to determine the amount of sulfur halides on the surface of these samples.
