Myth 1: Using anhydrous alcohol to clean the screen. Over time, monitors inevitably accumulate dust and stains. Many users believe that alcohol, especially that with a high purity level (over 95%), is the best cleaning agent. On the contrary, modern flat-screen monitors have a special protective coating on their screens to prevent static electricity and glare. If alcohol is used for cleaning, it can easily damage the coating, thereby significantly reducing the display quality of the monitor. In fact, the screen of a monitor, including its casing, should not be cleaned using solvents such as alcohol, gasoline, or laundry detergent. Special cleaning agents for monitors are available in supermarkets. When cleaning the screen, do not use a regular, rough towel; instead, use an eyeglass cloth with a better texture. Myth 2: The chassis is exposed for heat dissipation. When a computer is in use, especially in summer, it generates a great deal of heat. Some computer enthusiasts leave the case open in order to improve cooling and facilitate hardware installation and removal. Although this approach solves the heat dissipation problem, the open design of the chassis exposes the hardware, making it prone to dust accumulation; over time, this dust can become a threat to the computer. Furthermore, this practice also harms human health. As is well known, hardware such as CPUs, motherboards, and power supplies are all sources of high electromagnetic radiation, while the chassis can shield most of this electromagnetic radiation. If one exposes their body directly to high electromagnetic radiation merely for heat dissipation, it will end up being counterproductive. Myth 3: Covering it with a dust cover right after turning it off. When a new computer arrives at home, many people take great care to protect it, paying special attention to dust prevention measures. A dust cover is of course one of the essential items, but it is not advisable to put it on immediately after turning off the device. Although the host has stopped running after shutdown, a large amount of heat remains inside the chassis and behind the monitor cover; the temperatures of various electronic components are high, and they need to cool down gradually. If a dust cover is applied immediately, it can hinder the cooling of the hardware and even severely affect its service life. It is best to wait 1-2 hours after turning the device off, until the heat inside the chassis has mostly dissipated, before using the dust cover. Myth 4: Connecting hot-plug peripherals while powered on. When performing various hardware operations, some users, in an effort to save time, often connect and disconnect PS/2 mice, keyboards, and various serial and parallel port devices while the system is still powered on. These operations may seem ordinary, but they can actually be quite damaging to the computer’s main unit; in mild cases, they cause the system or hardware to malfunction, while in severe cases, they can damage the hardware interfaces or the motherboard. In fact, apart from USB, IEEE1394 interfaces, and serial hard drives, most peripherals found in ordinary desktop computers do not support hot plugging while powered on. Therefore, it is recommended to perform such operations with the machine turned off and powered off to avoid unnecessary damage.
