The heat treatment of stainless steel is carried out to improve its physical and mechanical properties, reduce residual stresses, and restore its corrosion resistance and heat resistance, which have been severely affected by prior processing and heating. This is done in order to achieve the best performance of the stainless steel or to enable further cold and hot working of it. The heat treatment methods for stainless steel include solution treatment, normalizing, annealing, quenching, and tempering. Stainless steel is a type of special steel, and its heat treatment has characteristics that are not present in the heat treatment of ordinary carbon steel. 1. Stainless steel sheets have a high nickel content, which makes diffusion difficult; therefore, a higher heating temperature is required, and the heating time is also relatively longer. 2. Stainless steel pipes have low thermal conductivity; their performance is poor at low temperatures, thermal stress is high, and cracks are likely to occur. 3. Austenitic stainless steel sheets have a high coefficient of thermal expansion, resulting in significant expansion at high temperatures. 4 The surface finish of stainless steel has a decisive impact on the product’s applications and price. The iron oxide scale formed during heat treatment will severely affect the surface gloss. 5. It is necessary to avoid scratches on the surface of stainless steel and prevent deformation during heat treatment.
